About the 'San Rafael' Retablo Plaque
Long a popular folk art form in colonial Spanish and Mexican culture, retablos are devotional paintings depicting divine icons and symbols, particularly Catholic patron saints. Chosen as representations and guardians of particular occupations and life situations, patron saints are often turned to in times of need or to express gratitude for a blessing. Made by hand in New Mexico, this retablo plaque honors San Rafael (Archangel Raphael). An original design by the artist, her art print is decoupaged upon hand-carved pine wood in traditional form. The reverse side includes a hole for hanging and a story of the saint's life.
Recognized in several religions, Rafael's name means 'Shining One who Heals' and tradition says his mission has always been one of healing. In the Old Testament, Rafael appears to Tobias as a pilgrim who travels with him, protecting him in many ways, including binding a demon in Egypt. Later, Rafael reveals himself as the Archangel, helping Tobias catch a fish that cures his father, Tobit, of blindness. In the Gospel of John of the New Testament, he is believed to the the angel who stirs the water at the healing pool of Bethesda. San Rafael is typically depicted holding a staff, symbolizing protection of pilgrims, and a fish, alluding to the healing of Tobit.
