About the 'Saint Cecilia' Retablo Plaque

Long a popular folk art form in colonial Spanish and Mexican culture, retablos are devotional paintings depicting divine icons and symbols, particularly Catholic patron saints. Chosen as representations and guardians of particular occupations and life situations, patron saints are often turned to in times of need or to express gratitude for a blessing. Displayed in homes to honor the saint or given as gifts of fortune and inspiration, retablos reflect a beloved historical tradition and cultural artistry.

Made by hand in New Mexico, this retablo plaque honors Saint Cecilia. An original design by the artist, her art print is decoupaged upon handcarved pine wood in traditional form. The reverse side includes a hole for hanging and a story of the saint's life.

Despite promising herself to God, Cecilia was forced to marry a nobleman named Valerian. During the marriage, she heard heavenly music in her heart and sang directly to God. Following the marriage, Cecilia explained to Valerian that an angel watched over her and she must remain chaste. Asked to see the angel, Cecilia explained he must first be baptized. Upon return from his baptization, Valerian saw the angel praying alongside Cecilia. The angel crowned the couple's heads with lilies and roses. It is said she continued to convert over 400 hundred people before being executed by the Romans for her Christian beliefs. Known for her angelic voice and association with music, St Cecilia is recognized as the patron saint of musicians, composers, and poets, songs, musings, and paintings of Saint Cecilia flourished during the middle ages. In modern days, music compositions and music festivals continue to carry her name, with her feast day celebrated on November 22nd.
